Choose your coast
Mauritius is small, but the coasts are not alike. The southeast trade winds shape each one.
North
Grand Baie, Pereybere and Trou aux Biches. Calm water, restaurants within walking distance, and the easiest base for first-time visitors.
West
Flic-en-Flac, Tamarin and Black River. Sheltered from the wind, with sunsets over the sea and dolphin trips at dawn.
Le Morne
The far south-west. Wind, lagoon and a mountain that is a World Heritage site. Kitesurfers come here for the wind. Others come to sit and watch.
East
Belle Mare and Trou d'Eau Douce. Long beaches, a steadier breeze and boats to Île aux Cerfs.
South
Souillac and the cliffs near Gris Gris. Wild and beautiful, but not for swimming. Visit for a day, not a week.
From May to October the days are cooler and drier. From November to April it is hot and humid, and the cyclone season runs mainly from January to March. December and early January fill first.
